About School Journalism Club

The School Journalism club writes the school's monthly newspaper, "The RLS Word." Student participants are selected by their teachers based on their writing skills and willingness to participate. Participation is for students in grades 4-8 and includes interviewing teachers and volunteers, writing articles and stories, taking photos of school events, researching topics, writing comics, working in groups to brainstorm ideas, and making posters for upcoming school events. Club members are given assignments with deadlines, to be completed on their own time.

The club meets twice monthly during school hours and children are under the supervision and instruction of parents Karen Ryan and Lena Heaton. This is an educational endeavor but we also hope the students will have fun.

Even students who are not in the club can participate. We have a monthly joke contest. If your joke is selected you will win a prize! Has your student written a great story, essay or poem? We would love to print it. Simply turn it into the office. Our paper also has classified adds for well wishes and messages. You can wish your friend "Happy Birthday" and have your message printed in the paper.
