More About Our School

Ramona Lutheran School offers excellent academics combined with spiritual growth and character development, giving children the tools for life-long success. The environment and curriculum at Ramona Lutheran School promotes achievement, fosters spiritual growth, nourishes social skills and encourages personal responsibility. A child’s education is a tremendous responsibility. It is profoundly important and dramatically impacts the life of the child and family. C. S Lewis said,“Education without values seems to make man a more clever devil.”

Mission Statement:“Ramona Lutheran School exists to nurture, educate and equip the whole child in a Christ-centered environment, which helps each person connect to God’s love in a deeper and more personal way.” Ramona Lutheran School is affiliated with the Pacific Southwest District of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.

Our Campus:We are situated on a fenced and landscaped 4 acre campus on the property of Ramona Lutheran Church. Our air-conditioned classrooms are bright and comfortable. The outdoor lunch area consists of quality picnic tables, a large shade cover and deciduous trees. Hot lunches can be purchased on Thursdays and Fridays. We have two newer state-of-the-art playgrounds designed/planned by a local landscape architect and the school playground committee. They meet all California safety standards and ADA requirements. The playground is surrounded by a new running track and a large grass area, boasts a new basketball and wall ball courts and bleachers for our softball field.

Our Teachers: Our teachers are credentialed. All of our elementary and middle school teachers have Bachelors degrees; several are in Master’s programs and have additional certifications. We are blessed to have such caring team of teachers who model Christ-like attributes; teachers who truly enjoy their work.

Academics: Traditional learning in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. We have an outdoor garden learning lab with organic seasonal vegetables, fruit trees and gardening curriculum.  We have computers in the classrooms.  Ramona Lutheran School participates in the San Diego Regional Lutheran Schools Annual Spelling Bee and in the Annual Regional “Eagle” math completion. We are proud to boast that in Oct of 2008, our 6th grade team ranked first place out of 35 teams! Our challenging curriculum promotes critical-thinking skills and we enjoy curriculum based field trips. Each year we have a science fair for grades 5 through 8, where students’ science projects are displayed for open house. Our 8th graders are well prepared for high school and will complete Algebra 1 by the end of 8th grade. Student progress and achievement is measured each year by ITBS standardized testing. Our smaller class sizes of fewer than 20 children, allow more individualized attention, better meeting the needs of our students.

Electives: Elective classes add enjoyment to learning! Included in the price of tuition, are monthly electives for grades 1st through 8th. Topics vary from month to month and include watercolors, cooking, clay work & pottery, crafts, and science to name just a few.  In addition, we have on site private piano lessons, group guitar classes and art instruction at affordable rates. Our students also participate in the annual all-school Christmas drama and musical program. We also have a school journalism club and a school newspaper.

Spiritual and Character Growth: All aspects of education are taught from a Christian world view. We emphasize character building and traditional values. The Bible-based religious curriculum is age appropriate and is an important part of classroom studies. Our staff is made up of caring teachers who have faith in Jesus Christ and are committed to the Bible and its teachings as a valuable part of daily life.

Students attend chapel services on Wednesdays, lead by Mrs. Karen Giebelman, 2006 Pacific Southwest teacher of the year! Each week, our student musicians play piano, drums and guitar as part of the worship and there is always a touching and relevant lesson taught. The topic of study for chapel this year is the 10 commandments. Our chapel offerings are currently being collected to assist a Christian orphanage in India.

Scriptural principles are an integral part of discipline plans. The campus boasts an orderly, safe and caring environment. We have students from a variety of denominations and various church backgrounds. You do not have to be Lutheran to attend. We do not teach Lutheran doctrine per say; our religious instruction is solidly Bible based.

Physical Education: We believe that physical education should emphasize life-long health and well-being. Our P.E teacher incorporates fun activities as part of our P.E. program.  We have a running club, weekly jazzercise and participate in the Jog-a-thon and Jump Rope for the American Heart Association. We also participate in Lutheran Schools regional cross-country meet as well as the Ramona Unified School District’s elementary school cross country meet.

Special Studies and Extracurricular Activities:
We offer a Washington D.C. trip for 7th and 8th graders and camp for 5th and 6th graders at “Indian Hills Camp”.  We have interesting school assemblies to augment learning. We also have a “Big Buddy/Little Buddy program” and free “Homework Club” for children who need extra assistance. We have an active Booster Club, made up of parents, who plan fun activities for the school. We have a new chapter of “Mom’s in Touch”. We are in the process of forming a marketing committee made up of volunteers, to promote our school. We have annual student talent shows, and an active Cub Scout pack/Boy Scout Troop.

We also host "Act'n Up" classes. "Act'n Up" is a children's community music and theatre group. Classes meet weekly. Click Here to visit their website.

Our History: Ramona Lutheran School is an outreach of Ramona Lutheran Church. The school serves the 80 square mile Ramona Valley. The congregation of Ramona Lutheran Church saw a need for Christian Education in our community, so the preschool was established in 1977. The K-8th program was added in 1985.  We serve approximately 130 families. Ramona Lutheran School is the only private Christian school in Ramona.

Our Intent: Our school seeks to shape students who are prepared to meet the challenges of high school and beyond. We hope to shape citizens who love their country and desire to serve their communities as leaders and role models with integrity, honesty, and character. We seek to shape young people into mature and responsible men and women who want to build bridges rather than walls of prejudice and indifference; people of faith who will infuse positive values and beliefs into their daily lives and practices.

Extended Care: Quality childcare is available before and after school on campus at the reasonable hourly rate of $3.75.

Tuition: (Please contact our school for tuition information.)
We offer scholarships, significant discounts for members of Ramona Lutheran Church, and multi-child discounts. Though private school tuition seems costly, we are proud that our tuition rates are among the lowest in San Diego. Our school is not financially supported by any source of government funding. We do not receive any financial assistance from the church. We operate solely on the funds generated by tuition and fund-raising.

Our Future: Our school added a new two-classroom building in 2002 to accommodate growth. The school board and staff continue to plan for growth in all areas of academic life as well as the physical campus. We have considered adding a comprehensive technology program. We intend to increase our enrollment so that we can best achieve the tenants of our mission statement; teaching more children and reaching more families with the message of the gospel via the vehicle of our school and its superior educational opportunities.

Why choose our school?

We believe that what we have to offer can’t be found anywhere else in Ramona. We have excellent academics, and a safe and wholesome social environment, infused with Christian values. We believe that values matter, character counts, and education is vital, so we focus on the basics: sound Christian teaching, reading, writing, math, science, social studies and P.E. These basics combined with active parent volunteers, caring and enthusiastic teachers, smaller class sizes and all of our extra curricular studies and activities make our school the best Ramona has to offer.
